Tow Vehicles

There are many things to consider when choosing your tow vehicle. Budget, towing capacity and equipment need to be taken into account before you make that final decision.

Maximum tow vehicle ratings you find in trailering guides are very optimistic. They rarely take into account added options on the vehicle or passengers and other cargo that may be carried when towing.

When looking at these guides, you can almost always assume that a trailering package or special trailering equipment is almost a necessity. Trailering accessories such as heavy duty alternators, trailering wire harnesses, heavy duty suspension, special hitch receivers, brake controllers, transmission coolers, engine oil coolers and heavy duty radiators are just a few to consider when determining a true maximum tow rating.

To avoid a dangerous situation or equipment failure, never push a tow vehicle beyond its true capabilities. Always be sure to have adequate towing equipment to match the load being towed.

A good rule of thumb is to take the advertised maximum tow rating and subtract 15-20% to be safe.
